Pianist Yi-Fang Wu and violinist Elbert Tsai present two dynamic recitals of well-loved sonatas: Manuel de Falla's Suite Populaire is a transcription from a set of seven songs for soprano titled "Canciones Populares Españolas." In this transcription, the violin mimics the voice and guitar through long lines and extensive use of pizzicato. Francois Poulenc's dark, tragic sonata includes markings such as "Presto Tragico" and "très violent", contrasting the rest of his otherwise light and humorous works. This sonata was dedicated to the memory of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, a likely victim of political assassination by Spanish fascists. Our program concludes with Franck's sunny and exuberant Sonata in A major, a wedding gift for violinist Eugène Ysaÿe.
